Sciatica

Pain that radiates along the path of the Sciatic nerve is known as Sciatica. The Sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body. It branches from the lower back and travels through the hips and buttocks and down each leg. When someone is diagnosed with Sciatica, typically only one side of the body is affected.

How Sciatica Occurs & Symptoms

Sciatica occurs when the Sciatic nerve is compressed, which normally is a result of a herniated disk, bone spur, or spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spine).

Typical symptoms of Sciatica include pain that radiates from your lower spine to your buttock and down the back of your leg, often times on the back of your thigh and all the way to your calf. Some patients report symptoms of mild achiness while others describe intense burning sensations, the sensation of an electric shock, and even excruciating pain. Numbness, tingling, and muscle weakness in the leg or foot on the side of the body that is affected are also common symptoms.

Who Is At Risk?

Diabetics, people who are obese, older people, people that sit most of the day, and those who have a job that requires heavy lifting or repetitive stress on the spine are the most at risk for developing Sciatica.

How Can You Prevent Sciatica?

While Sciatica is not always possible to prevent, there are certain ways to decrease your odds of having this spine condition. Some good ways to protect your spine are through good posture, maintaining a healthy body weight, strengthening your core muscles, eating a healthy diet, and being mindful of your spine health by not putting unnecessary stress on your spine.

When To See A Spine Specialist

Sciatica that is mild will generally get better over time. If your Sciatic pain does not go away, worsens, or is recurring, our Spine Specialists here at the Stridewell Clinic can evaluate you and formulate an effective treatment plan.

When To Get Urgent Medical Care

You should get urgent medical care if you have sudden or severe Sciatic pain that results from an auto accident or violent injury. Urgent medical care is also needed if you have trouble controlling your bladder or bowels.
